Ginger Burn Stir Me Up
The moment you feel a cold coming on or your allergies flare up, grab a cup of this concoction. It's a ginger-infused tincture that helps reduce sinus swelling and inflammation. It's best to drink it hot, however, it tastes great over ice as well. If you're having an allergy attack or feeling the cold come on, drinking it hot is recommended as the heat adds to the potency of this drink.
Ingredients
- 8 cups water
- 12-14 shakes cayenne pepper
- 1 tbsp cinnamon
- 2 inches ginger, sliced thin or grated
- ⅛ to ¼ cup dried licorice root
- juice 2 lemons, about ¼-⅓ cup
- ½ cup honey (or to taste) Do not use agave
- Antinflammatory tea, Elderberry tea, or Gypsy Cold Care (Traditional Medicinals) (optional)
Instructions
- In a large pot, add ginger, licorice root, and cayenne pepper to water and bring to a boil. (If using anti-inflammatory tea, add it now.)
- Simmer for at least 20-30 minutes, longer if you like to increase the taste and potency of ginger. You can also let this sit overnight with the ginger and licorice root.
- Tip: I use tea strainers to place the sliced ginger and licorice root. However, you can add them directly to the pot and scoop them out later using a strainer.
- Remove the ginger and licorice root. Stir in honey and lemon. Pour hot in a cup over Elderberry or Gypsy Cold Care tea and let steep for about 5 minutes. Stir on a regular basis as the cayenne will settle to the bottom of the mug.
- Serve hot or cold! Keeps for up to 2 weeks (if not longer!) in the fridge. Be sure to stir it up after it sits in the fridge or in your cup. The cayenne pepper tends to separate and settle.
- During an episode of allergies, cold, or sinus infection, drink at least two to four hot cups. The more the better!
